Articles : Where does the name Zac's come from?
Posted by TheBoss on 20/7/2007 16:20:00 (1797 reads)

Zac's Youth Bar was actually named after a tax collector! The name is taken from a story in the Bible - Luke Chapter 19.

In the story, Jesus visited Jericho and attracted a large crowd. A devious and highly unpopular tax collector called Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus, but couldn't see above the crowd. To solve the problem, he ran ahead and climbed a Sycamore tree.

When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up, saw Zacchaeus and much to everyone's surprise, suggested that they take tea together. The locals were highly indignant that Jesus had chosen to meet with a sinner. But after talking with Jesus, Zacchaeus pledged to give half of his goods to the poor and repay fourfold anything he had taken from others by false accusation. Jesus said "This day, salvation has come to this house".

For the Christian team behind the youth bar, the story was highly appropriate. Zacchaeus had a bad attitude and was hated for it. But Jesus still welcomed him and as a result, changed his ways forever. For a scheme that welcomed teenagers, many of whom were upset, frustrated and angry, adopting the names 'Sycamore Project' and Zac's fitted the bill perfectly.
